This is for you Rachelle! :-)
To be honest, I love silhouette shots, but I have not done a ton of them (sorry if I misled you earlier) I would like to work on more shots this semester - I have also been in a couple photo's that are silhouettes, and I love them! Maybe once my friend uploads them I can share them with the class
This is a baptism from this summer

I really like the pics you posted! Especially the water shot - I think silhouette shots leave something to the imagination, like a good suspense movie doesn't show any gore or bloody scenes, your mind fills in the blanks. That's the best (at least I think). :) Thanks for sharing!
Silhouette's were actually the first drawing, at least that's the mythology. The Corinthian maiden who traced the shadow upon the wall of her warrior lover who was heading off to battle is credited with this first drawing. Certain time periods there were silhouette crazes like the 1700s for example. Silhouette himself was a French minister of finance too busy cutting "silhouettes" to deal with the starving throngs. Rachelle's right, they DO evoke a sense of mystery while still portraying the individual...
Your baptism shot is incredible; the way the suns reflection is rippling in the water... I'm also a fan of the silhouette, which can be seen somewhat in my flickr album. I'm just fascinated with the shadow cutout that is created when light it coming in from the background.
Thank you - since I'm still new, most of my silhouette shots are accidental haha.
I had no idea about the history behind them though - that's cool!
